FAQ
Common questions before taking the first step towards clearer, more confident career decisions.
Who is the Career Direction Assessment for?
The assessment is suitable for anyone who wants greater clarity about their future direction, including:
- GCSE students choosing A Level, BTEC, T Level, Leaving Cert, or further education options
- A Level and Leaving Cert students considering university, college, apprenticeships, or career routes
- Students applying through UCAS, CAO, or other admissions systems
- Parents supporting their child with education or career decisions
- College and university students unsure about their next step
- Graduates considering career options
- Adults thinking about a career change
Is this only for students?
No. While the assessment is very useful for students making education and career decisions, it can also support adults who are reassessing their career direction.
It may be helpful if you are changing career, returning to work, feeling unfulfilled in your current role, or wanting to understand what type of work may suit you better.
Is this suitable for CAO students?
Yes. The assessment is particularly useful for students making CAO decisions.
CAO points and course requirements are important, but they do not tell you whether a course or career path is personally suitable. My Optimal Career helps students look beyond points by exploring their strengths, interests, preferences, and working style.
Can this help with A Level choices?
Yes. The assessment helps students better understand their natural strengths, interests, and preferred ways of working, which support decisions around A Level subjects.
It can be especially useful when a student is unsure which subjects may suit them, or when they are trying to keep future university, apprenticeship, or career options open.
Can this help with Leaving Cert subject choices?
Yes. For students in Ireland, the assessment supports Leaving Cert subject choice by helping them to reflect on their strengths, interests, and possible future pathways.
It should be used alongside school guidance, subject requirements, college entry criteria, and personal interests.
Can this help with apprenticeships or vocational routes?
Yes. The assessment is not limited to university pathways.
For some students, an apprenticeship, vocational course, technical qualification, or work-based learning route may be a better fit than a traditional academic pathway. My Optimal Career helps users to explore the types of environments, tasks, and career routes that suit them best.
Is this the same as a free online career quiz?
No. My Optimal Career uses a structured assessment process powered by the Harrison Assessment platform. It is designed to provide deeper and more meaningful insight than a simple online quiz.
The aim is not to give you a quick label, but to help you better understand your strengths, preferences, motivations, and possible career fit.
How does the assessment process work?
The assessment typically takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, although this may vary slightly from person to person.
For the most accurate and meaningful results, it is recommended that you complete the assessment in one sitting when you have sufficient time to focus and reflect on your answers. Taking the time to respond honestly and intuitively will help ensure the insights provided are as relevant and valuable as possible.
What happens after I purchase the assessment?
After checkout, you will receive a confirmation and welcome email. This email will explain what happens next and what information may be needed.
Your details will then be manually added to the Harrison Assessment portal by the administrator. Once this has been completed, you will receive the relevant access instructions.
Will I get instant access after payment?
Access may not be instant because users are manually added to the Harrison Assessment portal.
You will receive an automated welcome email after purchase, followed by the next steps once your assessment access has been arranged.
Can the assessment be completed online?
Yes. The assessment is completed online through the Harrison Assessment platform. It can usually be completed from home using a suitable device with internet access.
How long does the assessment take?
The exact completion time may vary depending on the individual user. It is best to complete the assessment when you have enough time to focus and answer thoughtfully.
The assessment should not be rushed, as the quality of your answers can affect the usefulness of your results.
What will I receive after completing the assessment?
- A personalised profile highlighting your greatest strengths, interests, and motivations.
- A Career Development Profile showing the environments and career paths where you are most likely to thrive.
- A ranked list of your Top 100 career matches with percentage match scores at multiple educational levels from diploma right up to PhD level.
- Detailed, printable reports for your Top 10 psychometrically matched careers.
- Career Guidance to support CAO choices, college courses, subject selection, and future career planning.
Will the assessment tell me exactly what career to choose?
No. The assessment won’t choose a career for you, but it provides strong, evidence-based guidance by identifying the careers, courses, and work environments that best match your strengths, interests, and motivations making it really easy to make the decision. The final decision remains yours.
Will it recommend specific CAO courses?
The most difficult part of the CAO process is identifying the career path that best fits your strengths, interests, and goals. Once you have greater clarity around that, choosing relevant CAO courses becomes a lot easier.
Is a one-to-one consultation included?
A one-to-one consultation is not automatically included.
If a follow-up consultation is required, you can contact us on info@myoptimalcareer.com to arrange.
Can parents purchase the assessment for their child?
Yes. Parents can purchase the assessment on behalf of their child.
During checkout or follow-up communication, it is important to provide the correct details for the person who will be completing the assessment.
Can this help if a student feels overwhelmed by career choices?
Yes absolutely! This service is tailor-made for any student who feels uncertain or overwhelmed when thinking about which subjects, CAO choices, courses or careers to choose.
The assessment provides a structured framework to explore strengths and preferences, helping students move from confusion towards clearer, more informed options.
